Mercy can help

“Mercy can help mitigate life’s troubles and offer warmth to those who have known only the coldness of judgment. May our way of communicating help to overcome the mindset that neatly separates sinners from the righteous.” — Pope Francis

Reflection: Rash judgement — finding moral fault with one’s neighbor without sufficient foundation (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2477) — is a common temptation in our information-saturated culture. This violation of the eighth commandment happens when one interprets another person’s thoughts, words, or actions in an unfavorable way without knowing the person’s true understanding or motivation. When have you been tempted to “separate sinners from the righteous,” to judge certain people as being worthy of God’s concern while others are not? How has God’s call to mercy helped you to assume the best of people until proved otherwise?
