Parish Life

The heart of a parish is the Eucharist, but the parish family is the body that makes it a unique and vibrant community with an exciting parish life. Our parish offers a variety of ways to be part of that communal family in addition to the celebration of the sacraments.

Welcome New Parochial Vicars!

Fr. Jonathan Cano Martinez, C.S.J. Ordained May 1, 2014, is here now from Mexico. He will be the new director for Hispanic Ministry starting July 1st.

Fr. Norbert Joseph, C.S.J. Ordained April 25, 2017, will be here in August from India. He will be the new attending priest at
St. Elizabeth Mission.

The priest is not an angel sent from heaven. He is a man chosen from among men, a member of the Church, a Christian. Remaining man and Christian, he begins to speak to you the word of God. This word is not his own. No, he comes to you because God has told him to proclaim God’s word. Perhaps he has not entirely understood it himself. But he believes, and despite his fears he knows that he must proclaim God’s word to you. For must not some of us say something about God, about eternal life, about the majesty of grace in our sanctified being; must not someone of us speak of sin, the judgment and mercy of God? So my dear friends, pray for him, carry him so that he may be able to sustain others by bringing them the mystery of God’s love revealed in Jesus Christ.
                                                       — Fr. Karl Rahner, S.J.

Birthday Greetings!

Fr. Sylvan celebrates is 86th birthday on June 25, 2019. Congratulations and heartfelt wishes for many more healthy years! Father will continue ministering here at St. Serra although he will step back a bit from his extremely busy schedule. Beginning July 1st he will have reduced office hours as Fr. Jonathan will step in as the parish’s director of Hispanic ministry. Quinceañeras are Fr. Sylvan’s favorite thing to celebrate, and he will still have 1 or 2 of them regularly—but not 3 or 4 anymore!

Birthday celebration for Fr. Sylvan will be after Saturday and all Sunday Masses, June 29 & 30 in St. Serra Hall. His 86th birthday is actually June 25—yes, it is 86 not 85 as reported last week. Please plan to stop into the hall after Mass for refreshments!  In his 56 years of priestly ministry, Fr. Sylvan has faithfully served the People of God as an ambassador for Christ. Retirement won’t change that!

On behalf of Bishop Roberto Mallari, from the Diocese of San Jose, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, Fr Manny Ramirez Guico will conduct a Mission Appeal at St Serra on the weekend of June 29-30.

There are 5 retired Priests (3 priests reside at Bahay Pari retirement home, and 2 others have severe medical issues). The Diocese also has 19 seminarians studying and preparing for the priesthood. Around 24 Sisters from 7 different religious congregations serve in diverse ministries and apostolates. In order to support and sustain their pastoral programs and outreach activities, the Diocese relies on your generosity and financial support.

Happy summer SJSP families!  Our year has come to a close.  My, how fast it flew by!
Each year, I spend about 30 minutes with our outgoing MB Pre-K parents sharing the results of their little saint’s annual assessment. While I do most of the sharing, each family takes that opportunity to express their gratitude to me for their saint’s growth socially, academically, spiritually and develop-mentally.  The following is one family’s testimony:  MBPS exceeded our expectations! Our little one attended both the Preschool and Pre-K programs. It was obvious to us right from the beginning that so much thought and planning goes into everything presented by the MBPS staff. They demonstrated a pure extension of that sense of family. Our child is who he is be-cause of the sincerity in teaming with us in shepherding his heart!  We’ll be back to enroll our youngest child!

Don’t miss your opportunity to experience the same for your little saint. MBPS is currently accepting registration for 2019-20. Call Miss Cheryl at 661-802-6375

Have you registered for ROAR VBS yet? This epic adventure engages the whole herd. Kids explore God’s goodness and celebrate a ferocious faith that powers them through this wild life!  Don’t miss this Totally Catholic expe-rience!

LA Archdiocese Priest Retirement Fund

Where do the archdiocesan priests go after they retire from teaching, preaching and serving on a regular basis? Who takes care of them? What do they need?

Like us, they desire rest & have needs for care and medical treat-ment as they grow older. Unlike most of us, though, their modest salaries were never meant to provide for them. Your gift to the Priest Retirement Fund is a meaningful investment and true blessing for the care & comfort of our spiritual fathers as they enter the later chapters in life. They deserve nothing less.
